Biography: Derek M. Brown

Derek M. Brown is a writer, educator, sommelier, and bartender living in Washington, D.C. He works with top restaurants and bars as well as fine liquor companies as a beverage consultant, including The Gibson where he works behind the bar. Derek teaches about spirits, bartending and wine at prestigious culinary schools CulinAerie and L'Academie de Cuisine.
Derek has received numerous accolades for his cocktails, teaching and wine stewardship, including "Sommelier of the Year" for 2008 by DC Modern Luxury magazine, one of the five top new sommeliers in the country for 2007 by Wine & Spirits magazine and "Bartender of the Year" for 2009 by Washington City Paper. He has appeared in a diverse array of publications and media including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today, Imbibe, Food & Wine and Details magazine.
Derek is an ambassador for the Museum of the American Cocktail in New Orleans, proud member of the DC Craft Bartenders Guild and is a graduate of the Beverage Alcohol Resource Program.
